Fun Facts: Nutmeg, Myristica fragrans is remarkable among spice plants in that it yields two important products, nutmeg and mace. This species originated in the Banda Islands. Both nutmeg and mace were well known in Europe by the end of the 12th century. They are now grown in most tropical countries, but Grenada (West Indies) and Indonesia account for the bulk of world production. Nutmeg isn’t really a nut, but the kernel of an apricot-like fruit.

Nutmeg is the shelled, dried seed of the plant Myristica fragrans, whereas the spice Mace, is the dried net-like covering of the shell of the seed. Like many other spices, nutmeg is one of those fragrant additions to food that brings a little kick of warmth and curious complexity that, once tasted in a dish, can’t be done without. Used often in baking, but also used in Chinese and East Indian cultures as a curative and aphrodisiac, as well as flavor enhancer.

Ingredients: Organic Nutmeg, Whole. Origins: Grenada & India.
