THE FAMILY TABLE
One of our families daily routines is when we gather around our large family table for dinner. As our older children have grown, gotten their first jobs, married, and set up their own homes it’s proven to be harder and harder to have us all together. Despite the changing years our kids know the table is always welcome.
Ever thought if family tables could share stories? I know ours would have so much to say.
Our long wood table is usually spread with a hearty meal at dinner time, sometimes it’s simple and other times we bring out the fancy stem glasses for special occasions or “just because”. Sometimes we even use the “fancy plates” (paper plates) as my youngest daughter calls them.
Our table always has a place for “one or two more”. It brings me joy when hearts and bellies are full and fellowship is well abundant around our well-loved and well used table.
This past Sunday, following church, our entire family—comprising all seven of our children and two spouses—came together to celebrate Easter. It’s not a rare occasion, it’s an every other Sunday afternoon tradition. It serves as a beautiful reminder that, despite the weariness of the world and the ups and downs of life, coming together around the family table nourishes not only our bodies but also our hearts.
HOW MANY MEALS DO YOU SHARE AT YOUR FAMILY TABLE EACH WEEK?
As your farmers, we’d like to encourage you to commit to at least one meal at home each week. Put the phones away, prepare your table to gather your loved ones for meaningful conversations, expressions of gratitude, moments of forgiveness and grace, sharing dreams and roaring laughter.
If it’s not something you do frequently, it may initially feel unnatural or even awkward, but persevere! With practice, you’ll find that your new rhythm will come more easily over time.
