Leave the head intact and unwashed until you’re ready to use it. Store in the crisper drawer in your fridge with some paper towels in a plastic bag. They’ll absorb any excess moisture, so your lettuce doesn’t spoil prematurely. Swap out the paper towels as they become soggy. If stored properly a lettuce head can last up to 2 weeks in the fridge.

Farmers Wife Tips – If your lettuce starts to wilt, you can restore its crispness by soaking it in ice water for a few minutes before you use it. Gently remove from the ice bath, dry off, and use it as you were planning. Lettuce bruises easily, so be careful not to shove other foods up against it. Using a storage container is better than a bag, which can end up squished against other items. Make sure your lettuce doesn’t get pushed to the back of the fridge, where it might be prone to freezing.

The thick sweet leaves of buttercrunch lettuce adds a good dose of fiber, vitamin A, vitamin K, and folate to the diet. The high-water content (about 95%) and low-calorie count make this lettuce a healthy diet choice, with the darker and greener lettuces carrying more nutrients than the lighter colored ones. Vitamin K, found in a healthy amount in buttercrunch, has been found to play an important role in bone health, and is thought to reduce the incidence of hip fractures.
